Vince Gilligan Discloses He Knows How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... At the Moment.
The creative mastermind did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a cultural phenomenon. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
With the first season of the popular sci-fi show reaching its finale—and the next chapter greenlit and underway—the creative team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus.
Regarding the Incredible Viewer Reception
One could easily to get distracted by the rampant praise and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. He is striving to steer clear of all that.
“It feels like constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I learn of it anecdotally, and that's intentional. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by audience chatter.”
“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.
The Central Mystery: Will Vince Gilligan Know the Ending of Pluribus?
Given that the creative staff aren’t being guided by fan response, does that mean they have mapped out how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… with some caveats.
“There are some interesting ideas about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a solid concept for a better idea. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Alternatively, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to fall back on.
“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Then again, one could always use the iconic TV endings?
“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
