The Mayor-Elect affirms he will make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion
The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point during his campaign.
A Historic Residence
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors since the post-war period.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central platform, was not quick to announce his residency plans promptly following his victory in November.
"My choice was based on keeping my family safe and the importance of directing my complete efforts on carrying out the affordability agenda New Yorkers voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.
A Fond Farewell
Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, a district known for its abundance of immigrant populations and international dining.
"To Astoria: many thanks for showing us the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.
"Although my address will change there, Astoria will continue to reside within me and my efforts as mayor," he said.
Campaign Controversy
During his election campaign, Mamdani linked his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.
Yet his opponents, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit although he came from a well-known family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side throughout his three terms, which ended in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a place for official events, and championed an extensive renovation of the older mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in a setting very different than his previous Astoria home.
Adorned in cream-colored walls, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure overlooking the East River.
Internally, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.
The estate, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also has increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, which means the city sets limits on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.
New Yorkers see such units as valuable lifelines as the price of rent rises faster than the means of many residents.
Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
