Stupidity and Royal Self-Entitlement Sunk Andrew, and It Could Continue Yet

The saga started with a single photograph, perhaps the most impactful ever snapped of a member of the monarchy.

Present was the Duke of York, with his arm around a young woman, while an associate beamed knowingly in the background.

Lacking that photograph, captured at a gathering in 2001, it would have been difficult to accept the claims of a adolescent who stated she was trafficked across the Atlantic and forced to have cursory relations with a individual of the royal family?

An odd, telling gesture by someone who had openly asserted to have no known about her, asserted he could not have had intimate contact with her, and yet paid a substantial sum of monarchical money to settle a drawn-out court action.

A Long Period of Controversy

In this context, discussions of the monarchy acting firmly to cut Andrew off are inaccurate. This affair has endured for the largest portion of 15 years since that image, and a further snapshot of Andrew walking congenially with a convicted sex offender emerged.

  • Self-importance: How long did his siblings, possibly even his relatives, realize that Andrew was so arrogant?
  • Problematic Connections: They must have realized, if his staff and the law enforcement were fulfilling their roles, that he had some extremely unsavory companions given he openly welcomed them to estates.
  • Fiscal Irresponsibility: If the monarchy did not know about his intimate behaviors, they certainly knew about his overspending with public money.

Trips were listed in royal annual reports: helicopter travel from the royal residence to a country club and back again in time for lunch, exclusive air travel instead of scheduled services, all for the benefit of "Airmiles Andy".

Existence of Entitlement

Furthermore the arrogance which required respect when he entered a area or the supreme obsession about his honorifics used on his letterheads in messages to his associates.

He managed to escape consequences while his mother, who unaccountably indulged him, was still living. The monarch did at least remove him of public duties and ceremonial ranks in the consequence of his disastrous and, as revealed, untruthful television interview six years ago.

Recent Developments

Merely in the last 14 days that events progressed rapidly, following the issuance of biographical works giving more grim details of his behavior and that of his associates.

More information have again exposed Andrew's assumption that he could escape being untruthful about his interaction with a disgraced individual.

The public (and the press) were far ahead of the royals. There was nobody of any importance to support him, a outcome of all those years of presumption.

Royal Worries

The more intelligent monarchical figures recognized that. The primary concern is to pass on the crown, if not as previously at least intact and unblemished.

They have spent the last 190 years trying to undo the reputation of earlier rulers, proving they are useful, dutiful and responsive to their people.

His actions endangered all that in jeopardy in an era when respect and secrecy is no longer enough.

Aftermath

Finally, the notoriously hesitant king was pushed further. There was little choice. The institution had lost control of the account.

Presently the stripping of titles and the persistent and permanent personal shame that will hurt Andrew most severely.

  • Downgrading: Lowered to just a commoner
  • Historical Precedent: The primary member to lose his honorifics in modern times
  • Military Service: Notably stinging given his service in the Falklands war

He remains a constitutional officer, in principle able to substitute for the king, and he is still eighth in line to the throne, but neither of these will actually occur.

Coming Developments

Do individuals he encounters still acknowledge him? Could they still slip up and call him Sir? Will they even say Sir,

Certainly, he is not withdrawing to an ordinary town, but to the monarchy's large estate at Sandringham.

At that location, he will be provided by the monarch with one of the grace and favour houses and given some form of financial support.

It is not his previous residence, where he paid a token payment for more than 20 years, and the county is a bit distant, but even so it may not be far enough.

Outstanding Concerns

Matters remain unresolved. There are still documents in the hands of American legislators to be made public.

  • Governmental Scrutiny: Could legislators request additional information
  • Financial Investigation: Or examine the improper use of public money
  • Judicial Potential: There may even be a police investigation into his behavior

Perhaps for the time being the harm to the monarchy to the institution is limited. The narrative from the royal household was clearly that the revocation of designations was what the sovereign, and especially other senior monarchical figures, sought.

A Shift in Position

An end to deception that Andrew was acting willingly. And, notably, the brief communication showed clearly that the institution were aligning with the accuser's account of events.

Furthermore, for the initial instance they eventually showed concern for the survivors: "These actions are considered essential, notwithstanding the reality that he maintains his innocence of the claims against him."

In the end it is presumption, self-seeking and indolence that will destroy the crown. In his stupidity, self-gratification and corruption, Andrew gives the impression never to have understood that reality.
