Springbok Player Jan-Hendrik Wessels Given Nine-Game Ban for Inappropriate Contact
The player will be unavailable for South Africa's autumn internationals.
South Africa prop Wessels faces a suspension of nine games for grabbing opponent Josh Murphy's genitals during the Blue Bulls' URC victory over Connacht.
The incident happened in the early stages of the close contest in Galway on last Friday, with Connacht forward Josh Murphy being shown a temporary dismissal after reacting angrily by striking Wessels on the head area.
Following the Connacht player complained to referee Mike Adamson, the situation was checked by the TMO, who determined no conclusive video evidence.
The Bulls player remained on the pitch until he was replaced in the second half of the game.
While the URC confirmed that Murphy's temporary sending-off was rescinded by a governing body, Wessels was deemed to have violated the code of conduct, which states:
"A player should not engage in actions that is against the spirit of good sportsmanship. This includes touching, twisting or squeezing the private areas."
Disciplinary officials concluded that the event met the level for dismissal and warranted a three-month ban, the minimum suspension under World Rugby rules for such an infringement.
Nonetheless, the player's ban was reduced by three weeks because of his good conduct prior to and at the hearing and his good record.
Wessels and the Bulls have the right to appeal, but as it stands, the suspension will prevent the 24-year-old out of the Springboks' autumn Tests against Japan, France, the Azzurri and the Irish team.
Wessels will also miss the Bulls' league matches against Warriors, the Emirates Lions and the Cell C Sharks, as well as European cup games with Bordeaux and Saints.
The prop has earned 10 caps for South Africa and was included in their Rugby Championship-winning squad during the recent tournament.
Murphy, meanwhile, is available to face Munster in Saturday's domestic clash after being cleared.
