Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Partnership Forged Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor
In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.
The September uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the New Political Partnership
According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several major political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
