Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His family, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.
“Still unsure,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that reassures me, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”
Authorities shared surveillance images earlier this week of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt were reported.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning near MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was taken to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a newborn.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd was inactive during the current season, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.
He signed with New York as a new signing in spring and was projected as an important component of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a practice session on August 2 and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd continued to be present all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he attends every game. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with New York in March.
