Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He States They Should Face Death Penalty
Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed fury after former President Donald Trump charged a group of Democratic representatives of being "turncoats" and declared they should be taken into custody and penalized "with execution" following their posting of a disputed video.
The Content That Triggered the Controversy
The recorded message, shared on earlier this week, features six Democratic elected officials who previously acted in defense or security positions.
"Similar to us, you all made an oath to protect and defend this founding document," the lawmakers stated in the short video. "And right now, the risks to our constitution don't only come from abroad, but from right here at home. Our statutes are unambiguous, you can refuse illegal orders, you can refuse improper directives, you have to decline illegal orders. No one has to execute directives that violate the law or our constitution."
Donald Trump's Angry Reaction
The recorded statement appeared to prompt a heated reaction from the previous commander-in-chief.
On Thursday morning, Trump posted on his social media platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional message, he stated: "This constitutes really concerning, and Harmful to our Country. Their comments cannot be permitted to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third publication, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Leaders Answer
Following Trump's statements on that day, Top Democrats released a unified statement censuring the comments.
"Violent politics has no role in this nation," they declared. "Congress members who appeared in the video all acted our United States with tremendous loyalty and distinction. We clearly condemn Donald Trump's offensive and risky death threats against congressional representatives, and urge House Republicans to strongly do the same."
The opposition officials also said that they had been in communication with security officials "to ensure the security of these officials and their families."
"Donald Trump must without delay take down these extreme digital publications and retract his dangerous discourse before he causes harm," the announcement stated.
Officials' Strong Reaction
The officials who appeared in the video also issued a declaration.
"We identify as ex-military personnel and defense specialists who value this country and swore an vow to safeguard and uphold the constitution of the United States," they said. "That oath continues forever, and we plan to honor it. No warning, pressure, or call for violence will prevent us from that sacred responsibility."
"The most revealing aspect is that the president views it subject to penalty by capital punishment for us to repeat the law," they added. "Military personnel should understand that we have their support as they execute their oath to the constitution and obligation to obey only legal commands. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."
They stated: "The entire nation must unite and denounce the ex-president's demands for our murder and political violence. This is a moment for ethical certainty."
Further Governmental Reactions
The Senate Democratic leader also censured Trump's comments and posted on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is demanding the death of government members."
He stated: "This constitutes an clear THREAT. Every Senator, each house member, every American – without partisan consideration – should condemn this without delay and unconditionally."
The Conservative official supported Trump's claim that the Democrats had participated in "treason", labeling the video as "highly unsuitable", adding: "This represents very harmful, you have important representatives of the government advising troops to defy commands, I think that represents historic in the nation's past."
The Republican leader also reportedly told journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the violation of treason" but that "lawyers have to parse the language and determine all that."
White House Statement
During a administration briefing on that day, when inquired by a reporter, "Would the president want to kill members of Congress?", the executive branch representative responded: "No."
"Let's be clear about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the spokesperson stated. "We see current representatives of the US Congress who worked together to organize a video message to members of the American armed forces, to current military personnel advising them to disobey the commander in chief's proper directives."
She said: "The purity of our military relies on the command structure, and if that system is violated, it can lead to people getting killed, it can lead to confusion, and that is exactly what these congressional representatives ... are fundamentally encouraging."
