Condemnation Surges as Trump's Social Media Remarks on Director Rob Reiner Draws Sharp Criticism
Personalities from both sides of the political spectrum and the entertainment world are coming together to denounce Donald Trump for his comments in the wake of the shocking passing of acclaimed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Provocative Social Media Statement
After the couple were found dead at their Brentwood home, Trump took to social media to describe the deceased director as "tortured and struggling". In a post, he claimed Reiner's demise was "because of the hostility he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and untreatable affliction with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments then pivoted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Police Developments and Arrest
Police have since confirmed the arrest of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to murder in relation to the case. It is reported his bail was set at a significant amount.
A Wave of Criticism from Celebrities and Politicians
The reaction to Trump's words was swift and scathing.
This is a disgusting and vile statement,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, also criticized the remarks. Goldberg referenced previous rhetoric from Trump regarding political violence, demanding, "Do you have no decency? Can you get any worse?"
The state of California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "He is a disturbed man."
Echoing this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a contemptible piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "He's just lost it. Now saying the Reiners caused their own demise because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."
Criticism from Within Party
A number of GOP elected officials also voiced disapproval.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about politics or rivals". She also mentioned challenges with addiction and psychological well-being some families face.
Fellow Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disrespectful" considering the nature of the deaths. He publicly challenged others in his political party to defend the statements.
Reiner's History and Views on Trump
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal critic of Donald Trump. During a previous interview, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also cautioned about the risks of authoritarian rule if Trump be reelected to power.
"We see authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "If we fall, there’s a risk that democratic systems crumble around the world."
Despite his strong opposition, Reiner had in the past expressed "absolute horror" and denounced political violence unequivocally after the killing of a different political figure.
A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal
Adding a element of historical irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously shared the anecdote of the session, noting Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" as being photographed on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
