Afghan Rulers Utilized Abandoned British Gear to Find Afghans Who Worked Alongside Allied Forces, Investigation Hears

A confidential source has revealed a parliamentary probe that British authorities abandoned sensitive technology permitting the Taliban to identify local individuals who collaborated with international military.

Information Leak Puts Thousands at Risk

The source, identified as Person A, testified that people concerned by the information breach were told to relocate and alter their contact details to protect themselves from the Taliban.

Lawmakers are currently examining the Conservative government's handling of a massive breach of confidential data concerning almost nineteen thousand Afghans who had asked to move to Britain to escape the Taliban.

How the Leak Was Discovered

An electronic document containing private information, comprising identities, addresses and sometimes relative details, was inadvertently disclosed by a staff member employed at British military command in last year.

The breach came to light only in August 2023, when identities of nine people who had applied to settle in the UK surfaced on online platforms.

Militant Technology

It appears there is a misunderstanding that Afghan rulers are without the same sort of facilities that we have,” she told MPs.

Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; they possess it. Once they acquire mobile details, they can locate your precise location. This is exactly how specialized teams accomplished.”

When questioned about regarding if authorities had access to sophisticated technology, the source confirmed: “They possess all resources.”

Aftermath of the Security Lapse

Initial findings provided to the committee suggested that approximately fifty relatives and co-workers of individuals impacted by the leak had been killed.

A legal restriction concerning the breach was put in force in last year and restricted relevant facts regarding the matter from media reporting until July 2025.

Protective Actions

Due to legal constraints, the source and the aid group associated with informed affected households they were assisting that they had “concerns that somebody's phone had been compromised”.

“We recommended that they moved if they could and altered their mobile numbers. Those were the crucial data that, should militant forces acquired this information, would cause their location being found,” Person A explained.

Contested Findings

The whistleblower argued that internal investigation conducted by an ex-government employee had been mistaken to conclude that the acquisition of the records by militant forces was “unlikely to substantially change current risk levels”.

“The thing to remember is that these individuals are not confronting the Taliban; they live secretly. The primary issue involves former occupations.”

Person A described terrible treatment endured by affected individuals, comprising electrocution, simulated drowning, and physical abuse.

“Instances include toddlers who have had bones crushed to pressure the family to reveal locations,” Person A stated.
